parts per liter (ppl)

Another day, another absurdity.

[Slashdot] Another Crumbling Reactor Springs a Tritium Leak

I had tritium leaks last week in Olympic Swimming Pools -- although that article was back from December. I have nothing more to say, except that where the "Rutland Herald" invents the unit "parts per liter", they actually meant pico-Curies per liter. I hope that makes things comprehensible.

  1. It's always possible to manipulate language to achieve the desired effect when you are among people who need to go back and re-take 7th-9th grade physics and chemistry classes.

E.g. You could say that the EPA allowable limit for natural uranium in drinking water is 30 µg/l. Of course, that doesn't really scare anyone.

There are some people who seem to think that 'natural' is always good, and uranium is one of those evil artificial things. The first thing you do is to avoid ever using natural in front of uranium and you clarify its origin if and only if it came from some human process that you are opposed to.

The second thing you do is of course to change the units into atoms per litre.

The allowable limit is 76 quadrillion uranium atoms per litre; OH the HUMANITY!

Then you finish off by abusing LNTH: Are they insane?!? Even a single uranium atom can kill!
